Overview

Trendify is a company that manufactures smart wardrobes designed to facilitate and maximize storage in a way that allows us to visualize the contents of our wardrobe. Their wardrobes streamline the “getting ready” process and keep track of clothing in a database which can also help us build more sustainable behaviour by getting more wear out of our clothing.

Mandate was to create a solution to the question: “how might we organize a wardrobe”, and design a pop-up shop to market the solution.

Research

Field Research

We did some field research at Ikea to see the existing wardrobes and how they can be integrated with new features from our brainstorming session.

Problem Scope

With the goal to understand what needs to be improved with existing wardrobes, we did some literature review and research online. We discovered that when it comes to organization, there are several daily frustrations people deal with linked to their wardrobe; these include deciding what to wear, finding the clothes one might want or need, and spending too much time trying a million things on before deciding on an outfit. According to the United States Environmental Protection Agency, the average the average American throws out 81 pounds worth of clothing every year; the definite solution to this is to reduce purchases and get more use out of the clothing items we have in our wardrobe. If the entire getting ready process is more systemized, it will allow users to be more aware of their dressing habits and the content of their closet.

Ideation

Brainstorming

We brainstormed ideas by asking ourselves: how might we organize a wardrobe? what is the best way to organize our clothes to get the most out of our wardrobe? The top ideas surfaced were by preference (the wardrobe can make potential outfit suggestions based on current favourite items or outfits), by events (the wardrobe connects to your calendar and picks clothes that are occasion appropriate), and by weather (checks forecast and selects clothes).

Sketching

Sketches were made to visualize some features including the tactile mirror interface, the light-up hangers, and a camera to aid in clothing projection.

Features

Tactile Mirror

The mirror acts as an interface with suggested items and outfits. Using augmented reality and artificial intelligence, the wardrobe projects outfits onto your body on the left-hand side which allows you to hit “like” or “dislike”, influencing future suggestions. This feature allows users to select outfits quickly because it eliminates the need to try them on. On the right-hand side, there’s a spotify-like selection of chosen outfit-sets based on recent likes, preferences, weather, and events.

Smart Hangers

Hangers light-up once an outfit is selected, ensuring you can find your selection quickly (they are also displayed on the wall in the pop-up shop).

Prototyping

Wardrobe

An initial prototype was developed from discussion and sketching. The overall look is simplified as the camera is integrated into the mirror itself, and the doors slide open rather than swing open.

Pop-up Shop

The Trendify pop-up shop in placed outside and is partnered with clothing stores and boutiques to advertise their items on sale. The event is meant to introduce people to the new smart wardrobe technology and to inform people of the sustainable and streamlined benefits of having one in their home. Users can see and try out how quick it makes clothing selection, and how efficient it is at creating outfits.

Branding

The flower icon and the colours reflect the calm and sustainable mood of the company and their wardrobes. The typeface is modern, simple, and creates a balance with the flower icon.

Takeaways

  • Further research should be done on how this wardrobe can potentially reduce waste and save time
  • A specific target audience should be determined linked with cost / price of a unit of a wardrobe
  • These wardrobes would potentially be useful for in-store purchases and to reduce need to try items on
