Overview

Flipping through magazines is something that is becoming more and more obsolete. Not only is it becoming obsolete, it is time consuming and difficult to find the images we actually want. Additionally, sometimes google or other search engines give you images that aren't open source.

How might we find online mixed media images quickly for unique creative works?

Flip is an online platform built for generating a set of images perfect for new compositions such as moodboards, collages, and other projects. It allows you to type in all keywords you need into one search bar and it’ll generate one image per keyword from several open source image websites. You can lock the images you like and keep hitting “enter” to generate new ones. It was inspired by coolors.co which is the colour palette version of Flip. Using images sourced from different websites allows Flip's search results to generate images that are different in styles (e.g modern, older, historical, or illustrative).

An interactive prototype was created to demonstrate how the website would work.

Enter "d" in the search bar and hit enter to search. Once searched, try to lock an image and hit enter again.

Branding

A logo and short brand guide including the wordmark, colours, and typography details was created.

The final website was coded using HTML, CSS, JS, PHP. Additionally the bootstrap and JQuery libraries were used, along with the Unsplash API.

Takeaways

The next steps for this project would be to add a download feature to be able to download the images rather than "save as" and integrate more sources.
Although conceptualized to contain images from different sources, it contains images from unsplash only because of the lack of APIs for other sources.
